Merry Christmas:

I think most of us can agree with one thought as we move into the new year: "Thank goodness the election is over!" (And most of all, no more campaign ads!!!)

No foreign trips this year, but we got out to see daughter Cindy & Israel & family (AKA "the thundering herd") in Chandler, AZ, last February & they returned the favor by spending July with us here in Virginia. Easter & Thanksgiving involved trips to Poquoson (that's east of Newport News) to visit son Steve & Jenny & their family. And they got up here on a few occasions, most notably when we attended one of Sarah's gymnastic meets, where she did very well. Her older brother Andrew is into lacrosse.

It's not that I'm getting older, but I think my "get up and go" "got up and went!" And how about this for a great idea? "Large print alphabet soup for seniors!"

Update on Mary's herniated disk: In a nutshell, 100% successful arthroscopic surgery! Speaking of the wife, she went to an anti-China rally, saw the sign "Free Tibet" & said, "Iíll take two!"

My involvement with soccer continued as League Director for "the big girls" (U-19) & I'm proud to report a Springfield team was fall league champion. My Arizona grandkids carried on the family soccer tradition, as Noah & Maggie played in the spring and SarEl & Yonah in the fall. All did well and, most importantly, had a lot of fun.

And, of course, the license plate section: WIMZKAL; YESU4U; &RSUN; CRZ 4GLF; SEW WUT; LYVN LYF; 1 OLGOAT; HSKR FAN; IM SMLN; CUL8R; FNSH WEL; TYPA MOM; HD2HNDL; STA PUT; MXD IP; GR8IDA; AZUWISH; THR YET & HAPY2GTR.

Almost forgot the highlight(s) of the year: I was published in The Post -- twice! Most recently, in a letter to the editor when I took E.J. Dionne to task for referring to "religious Christians" (what other kind, eh??) & earlier for a story on "Yonah & the Toppled Plant" (check it on my Web site: www.users.com/ldmark/).

This from Albert Einstein "The difference between intelligence and stupidity is that intelligence has its limits."

-- Best wishes for a prosperous 2009 from Mary & Larry (& Suzi, the reclusive, recalcitrant cat)
