SYC Senior Girls
Take Two Crowns at
Sterling Tourney

Springfield, VA, Nov. 28, 1999 -- The Springfield Youth Club's Senior Girls League garnered first-place trophies in both the Under 16 and Under 19 divisions at the Sterling Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament Nov. 25-28 -- both with come-from-behind ties and wins in penalty kicks.

The U-19's, coached by Frank Enos, fell behind twice in the final, but rallied both times with goals by Jeannie Mahoney to end in a 2-2 tie against Southwestern. After two scoreless overtimes, the game went to penalty kicks. Successful kicks by Kim Troast, Ashley Arnista, Mahoney and Dianna Austin and a nice kick stop by SYC goalie Katie Trahan put the trophy in the hands of the Springfield club.

In the U-16 game, the SYC team, coached by Jim Miller, rallied in the second half against a Fairfax Police Youth Club team to tie the score 1-1 on a goal by Paula Mulhair, who was assisted on a high kick by Adria Truempy. Again the championship went to penalty kicks, which SYC won on efforts by Truempy, Jessie Chesnutt, Kristin Frichtl and Elizabeth Adolfie and two fine stops by SYC goalie Alix Brooks-Kenney.

In the preliminary games, the U-19's beat Reston 3-2, tied Herndon 0-0 and beat Chantilly 4-0. Scoring were Mahoney (2), Dianna Austin (2), Jessica Troast (2) and Kelly O'Neill, with assists going to Austin (3), Beth Buettner, Becky Meadows and Mahoney.

The U-16's preliminary games saw them lose to Prince William 0-1 and then beat Southwestern 4-1 and Chantilly 1-0 to gain the finals. Scoring were Truempy (3), Michelle Anderson and Mulhair, with assist going to Mulhair (2), Mo McClelland (2), Truempy, Jamie Fulmer, Sonya Simpson and Freddie Cope.
